Repairs with Epoxy
Maintenance, Structural Repairs, Technical SupportWe use Oatey brand epoxy putty for these repairs. It is a two part “stick” that simply needs to be worked by hand to achieve a uniform color, thereby mixing the 2 parts in such a way that they bond quickly and permanently.
We are not affiliated with the Oatey company or their products, so we are unbiased in this recommendation, but it has worked well for us for years in many applications. It is available in the plumbing departments of most hardware stores for under $10.
As you can see from the repair below it can be worked into shapes quite easily, making it ideal to replace broken off, missing pieces.
It can be sanded, shaved with a knife, and sculpted with a minimum of effort, and then painted with common household or hobby paints.
In the first step, we filled the gap and let it dry while we made another shaped piece to apply over the initial fill.
The rounded piece is then fitted on to the repair and final sculpting is made to match the surrounding parts.
Using some hobby paint we had, we painted it as best we could. While not a perfect match you would be hard pressed to see the repair from 5 feet away!
If you have a hard time finding these materials, let us know and we will do our best to help you find it, or send you some for small repairs!
